Installing CCHelper on Windows 3.1:
- Note: I recommend at least a 486/33 with at least 8 meg RAM to run CCHelper. A beta tester who tested CCHelper on this configuration had this to say:
"The program is a bit slow on my 486DX-33 with 8 MBs RAM. That's to be
expected. It is also something of a RAM hog and I have trouble leaving
CCHelper running if I want to run NetScape to view the output results. Nothing tragic has occurred but swapping in and out
of/switching between the two programs becomes increasingly lengthy and I
fully expect it to grind to a halt one day. If I close one or the other
completely, it goes back to normal sluggish operation."
- Download the zip file to an empty, temporary directory (eg c:\cch1temp). Click here
to download. On Netscape, you respond
"Save File" to the "Unknown file type" prompt.
This file is approximately 6 meg,
it takes about an hour to FTP using a 28.8 modem.
If downloading such a large file is
problematic for you, contact me
about getting CCHelper on diskettes through the mail. I mailed diskettes (and paid the postage) to people
who have agreed to
send the diskettes (and pay the postage) on to the next person who needs them. If you will agree to do the same, I can
arrange to have someone send them to you. Please feel free to copy the diskettes when you get them. You may also
send copies to others, but please keep the original set your received until I ask you to send them on. There are 5 diskettes in each
set.
- Unzip the file (cci16105.zip) you just downloaded into the temporary directory (eg c:\cch1temp).
If you
are running pkunzip from the DOS prompt, use the -d switch to create directories. The unzip should create
a "disk1" directory under the temporary directory (eg c:\cch1temp should have a c:\cch1temp\disk1 directory in it).
If you can't get the disk1 directory to create, during the install (see below) you will get a prompt to "Insert disk1".
When this happens
just backspace over the "disk1" in the prompt and click OK.
- Execute setup.exe created by the previous step. Respond to the prompts as follows:
- If you get a message that says "Cannot find CTL3D.DLL", choose "CLOSE", then choose "OK to continue".
- Choose "Install Products" and "Next"
- CCHelper will take 13 meg after it is installed.
If you want to install CCHelper on the "C" drive: choose "Typical" and "Next", click on "CCHelper", "Next".
- If you want to install CCHelper on another drive:choose "Custom", "Next", click on "CCHelper", "Details" and change the "c" in "c:\cch1"
to the drive of your choice, press TAB and click on the "Change drive letter only" prompt and then "Yes". All of the "c:"s should
be changed to the drive of your choice, choose "OK".
- Continue to choose "Next", taking all of the defaults.
- If you get a message to insert disk1, see the "Unzip" instructions above.
- Note: You may delete the zip file (cci16105.zip) and all of the files stored in the temporary directory (eg c:\cch1temp) once
you are confident that the application is running and you will not need to re-install. These files are not needed
to run CCHelper.
