1860 Census

The following is a statement written by A.S. Thurmond, enumerator for Refugio County, at the end of the last sheet of the census:

"On examination of my work I find several small mistakes made in copying, the principal of which is in Column No. 1 all of which I have been  compelled to correct and will show them corrected on this the last sheet and 56th page of the Schedule No. 1.

You will discover that I numbered many dwellings with other families which is owing to the callings and occupations, many of whom have a camp or cabin occupied by one or more men for the purpose of attending to stock, others who are engaged in catching fish, turtles, etc., all of which I have denominated dwelling houses."

When transcribing these records, I found the handwriting quite clear but often difficult to decipher.  In addition, Mr. Thurmond's spelling appeared to be basically phonetic with a lot of variation.  I transcribed the spelling even when I knew it to be incorrect.  To offset this, I have typed in "green" what I believe to be the correct spelling of names.  If you see corrections that need to be made, please e-mail me. 

I have listed the pages by Post Office to help you locate where your ancestors lived in the county.  Most often, precinct numbers are of little help in aiding us in identifying the part of the county where the individuals lived.  Additionally, the page numbers I have listed are the page numbers entered by A.S. Thurmond and do not correspond to the printed numbers which you will find in an AIS index.  Accordng to Mr. Thurmond, he completed 56 pages for the census.  I used the images at Ancestry.com and did not find 56 pages.  I cannot account for the difference or the missiing pages.
