Mortality Schedule

Below is a listing of those who were enumerated as
having died during the year ending June 1, 1870.  If the enumerator truly took
the deaths from June 1, 1869 to June 1, 1870, then note that an April death below
would be April 1870, not April 1869, and an October death would be October 1869.

While the handwriting was clear for most of the instrument, there were some places where
words were illegible.  It is suggested that researchers review the scan.  If there are
corrections that need to be made, please contact me at

Annotations have been added when additional information could be found for an individual.

This John Duke is possibly the son of John M. Duke and Elizabeth J. Kuykendall
married March 11, 1867, in Refugio County, Texas.

McMillan, Eugenia 39 F W M Texas     Mar Keeping House Originally this read "Dropsy of Head". Then, dropsy was crossed out and "Dis-" written above it.

This is Eugenia Carothers, wife of James McMillan.
Her parents were Thomas Carothers and Elizabeth (sometimes Mary) Kuykendall
(might have been the surname of a first husband.)

A Mrs. Susan Thompson married William Thomas on May 26, 1866,
at the home of William Sheriff near the Mission of Refugio in Refugio Co., Texas.

Martin, R.E. 26 M W   Louisiana     September Cattle Driver Originally this read "Dropsy of Head". Then, dropsy was crossed out and "Dis-" written above it.

An R.E. Martin is found in the 1860 Census for Refugio, at the Refugio Post Office.
He is 16 and the son of Robert and Setilla Martin, both born in Louisiana. 
Siblings in this census record include John H. (14), James S. (12), Cordelia (8), Christopher C. (6) and William (1). 
Also, Zac Martin, age 21, lives in the household. [Note: This Zac Martin was also known as Rye Martin, and he
was the husband of Mary C. Doughty.  Rye Martin died in McMullen Co., Texas.]
Other known siblings were: Nancy Jane (1831), Martha Seleta (1832), Mary (1834), Sarah (1837), Amos (1840) and Catherine "Kate" (1842).

This is probably Mary Brundrett, age 22 in the 1860 census, and wife of George Brundrett.
In 1860 they had children John (5), Virginia (4), and Ann (2). 
This George Brundrett was listed as an indigent Confederate soldier in 1865 with a wife and six children.
He is listed in the 1870 census for Refugio County without a wife and with eight children.

Remarks:  George French & H. Fitzpatrick were murdered - beat to death  with a club.  James Fenney was killed by a mob.  C. Farrego was stabbed with a knife in hands of George Wittington, all in less than a month in this county.  The four last names are transient without families.
